OC Yiddish Festival
24 SepThe first OC Yiddish Festival was a big hit — there looked to be upwards of 800 people at the temple in Fullerton. Most U.S. Yiddish theatre comes right from my neighborhood in NYC & I went with my grandmother to a revival once. Great stuff!

Johnny is the (Song) Name
5 SepMy friend Johnny in England loves Northern Soul. For his birthday, I compiled 170+ women-sung songs from the 50s & 60s. . . all mentioning “Johnny”.
The project has taken on a life of its own –with help from cool yahoo groups like this one, and, at the moment, the list is up to 186 songs. They’re not all Northern Soul, but they are all sung by women in the 1950s and 60s.
Here are ten goodies:
’53 Johnny is the Boy for Me – Mary Ford & Les Paul
’57 Johnny – Jeanette Baker & the Dots
’60 Mr Johnny Q – The Bobbettes
’61 Johnny on my Mind – The Shirelles
’61 My Johnny – Little Miss Wanda
’62 Johnny I’m Sorry – The Elgins [with Unknown Female Singer]
’62 Johnny Angel [French Version] – Renee Martel
’67 Jedde Hat im Leben einin Johnny [German] – Gitte
’68 Johnny Guitar [Italian Version] – Gigliola Cinquetti

Catalina Island Marilyn Monroe and Lurch
20 AugTwo weeks ago today, I was on Catalina Island. The Marilyn Monroe exhibit was opening at the island museum. I LOVE CATALINA.
One look at the guy above and I knew he was a character actor, with a lovely, gentle face. What I didn’t realize immediately was that he was Lurch!
